Why ‘Not in a Rut’?
The ‘Not in a Rut’ blog was born from the aspiration to help others who feel like they are stuck in a rut. Until recently this is exactly how we felt but with a few lifestyle changes we were able to climb out of our own ruts. It was by no means easy and we realised that we would have to continually work at it to ensure that we didn’t slip back in to our old patterns. However, once we were armed with our new insight we were confident that we would succeed. It is this insight that we want to share with you in order to help you out of your rut and to maintain a happier, healthier way of life.

If you aren’t stuck in a rut per se and are instead looking for new and exciting ways to spend your spare time then take a look at our try something new section.
How did we improve our situation?
Based on our own personal experience a rut is something that occurs gradually. True, you may wake up one day to realise that you are in fact stuck in a rut but it is unlikely that it’s something you suddenly fell into. A rut is usually the culmination of a number of aspects of your life not being in sync. For instance, our work-life might be the first aspect of our life to be effected but that will in turn put pressure on our family-life, then a stressful family-life might affect our wellbeing and we continue to spiral downwards until eventually we feel stuck. The thought of correcting every aspect at once is overwhelming and ultimately unrealistic. The key to successfully getting out of a rut is to first prioritise the facets of life you find most important and work on them one at a time.
We have included a list below of what we consider to be important to us. Bear in mind this list isn’t going to cover everything because everyone is different and will likely have differing opinions on what is most important to them. Also keep in mind that people grow and change and their priorities change with them. Establishing what means the most to you in life allows you to prioritise your goals and set targets to improve specific aspects of your life. Follow the links below for more information on each topic.
- Relationships – in this context apply to all of the relationships in your life; family, friends, your partner, and even your work colleagues.
- Health and Wellbeing – applies to your general health; whether it is mental or physical. Most people have room for improvement in their life when it comes to diet and exercise.
- Personal Finance – Not all of us want to be millionaires (although it would be nice). We should aim to be comfortable so that we don’t need to stress about where money is coming from. Paying close attention to budgeting and smart investing are a few possibilities to consider.
- Career – It doesn’t matter if you are a high flying corporate executive or a proud stay-at-home parent, your career is one of the most time consuming aspects of life. It is advisable to pick a career that you enjoy and let it take you where you want to go.
- Recreation – this relates to how you spend your spare time. Keeping yourself active with sports or hobbies and trying new things can help to change up your usual routine.
- Personal Development – Furthering your education at a college or university is only one option. Embarking on a new course, whether it be learning a language or taking a cooking class can help to further develop your skill set. Developing a valuable asset (you!) can lead to better job opportunities and self-satisfaction.
- Home – Irrelevant of whether you are renting or buying your home is likely where you are spending most of your time and money. Creating a good space for yourself is important and making the decision to rent or buy will have an effect on the rest of your life.
